Council Takeover #2 Oriarna

June 8 with ORBIT

This was the first 'making day' in preparation of Jupiter Rising!

Having caught the bus from Edinburgh, I fell in with a group of visitors to Jupiter Artland for the long(ish) walk up the drive.

We had a busy day ahead of us – screen printing our original designs onto the merchandise and ORBIT's and Jupiter Rising's logo onto our uniforms – 50 t-shirts in total!

Sarah and I worked on t-shirts, whilst Kate and Matt worked on the costumes next door. Moving two tables into the work area provided our daily exercise. As a novice at screen printing, I found the process surprisingly simple. Preparation took up most of the time – we had to place a piece of cardboard inside each shirt, tape the shirt to the table, lay the screen on top, and mark its corners on the shirt. Print and repeat.

By the time lunch hour rolled around, Lauren returned from B&Q and brought a welcome shipment of costume supplies with her. At this point, I was busy ironing on the ink of the last 18 T-shirts to be printed. A long, drawn out process, each one had to be ironed for a minute and a half. I was glad of the lunch break, but even happier that Lauren took over the ironing afterwards! We started a production line: I laid out, stuffed, and taped the t-shirts onto the table; Sarah marked the corners of the printing screen with masking tape; Lauren ironed the last batch of shirts and passed them to me.

The highlight of the day for me was printing the coloured designs - a magical mixing of three colours onto the material produced a satisfying square of shades. Now all that’s left to do is to wear them!

All in all, we had a great day. Whoever can come to the next one is in for a treat!
